Regional Focus: Developing LNG infrastructure for West Africa’s gas-to-power push
In West Africa, governments have embraced the use of gas as a low-carbon fuel to increase electricity generation, which is creating additional demand for LNG.
New in Gas Processing Technology
Before biomethane can be supplied to private and industrial customers, its calorific value must first be adapted to the natural gas network.
U.S. Industry Metrics
The EIA expects that total U.S. consumption of natural gas will average 83.7 Bft3d in 2020, down 1.8% from 2019.

Gas Processing News
Global economic slowdown has led to reduced demand for LNG produced in the U.S.
Increase turbine availability and efficiency with real-world-tested filters
Gas turbines used in the onshore oil and gas industry require protection from contaminants within the inlet flow.
Safely design brazed aluminum heat exchangers to avoid thermal shock
Although brazed aluminum heat exchangers (BAHEs) are designed per American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Pressure Vessel Code Section 8, they are still very sensitive to temperature fluctuations.
Mitigate pipeline corrosion by prioritizing positive material identification
In the oil and gas industry, the emphasis on safety and quality assurance of assets at the worksite is always top of mind.
A project manager’s challenges in LNG megaprojects
Megaprojects are large-scale, complex ventures that typically cost $1 B or more, take many years to develop and build, involve multiple public and private stakeholders, are transformational and impact millions of people.
Startup troubleshooting of amine units in LNG export facilities
The production of LNG has gained considerable importance in the past few years because of the energy value contained in natural gas, the ability for export and its lower environmental impact in terms of emissions.
Streamline the LNG FERC application process
In the U.S., the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), along with several other federal, state and local agencies, governs review and approval for construction and operation of LNG facilities.
Regional Focus: Mega-project in the FSU: Ongoing development of the Shah Deniz gas field
Multiple billions of dollars have been invested to develop the Shah Deniz gas field.
Safety and Sustainability: A new standard of safety for onshore passive fire protection
The onshore energy and petrochemicals sector is defined by the strength of its safety culture, but it has only recently begun moving toward adoption of the highest fire protection standards.
Industry Focus: COVID-19 stokes competition for Europe’s LNG market
The level of competition in the global LNG market is rising as major producers look to increase their shares in a market severely weakened by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Editorial Comment
The IEA’s “Global Gas Security Review2020” report, released in October, projects that global gas demand will fall by 3%, or 120 Bm3, in 2020—the largest drop on record.
Mitigate elemental sulfur condensation in a compressor knockout drum
Produced natural gas must be compressed for export and further processing on the main processing platform. When sour gas (i.e., gas containing H2S) is compressed, the compressor discharge gas is used as a seal gas that is routed to the inlet of the first stage of the compressor.
New in Gas Processing Technology
Gasconsult Ltd., the developers of the ZR-LNG dual-methane open-cycle natural gas liquefaction process, was selected by Malaysia’s Petronas as the winner of the 10th Petronas Technology Challenge.
U.S. Industry Metrics
In 1H 2020, U.S. net natural gas exports averaged 7.3 Bft3d, or nearly 80% (3.2 Bft3d) higher than during 1H 2019.
Global Project Data
Although the gas processing and LNG industries took a major hit during the COVID-19 pandemic,
Gas Processing News
Russian independent LNG producer Novatek recently launched its first small-scale LNG plant in the Chelyabinsk region.
Understanding gas sweetening processes
Natural gas produced in gas fields is a mixture of hydrocarbons, mostly C₁ through C₆+, inert gases (N₂, He, H₂, Ar, O₂), acidic gases (CO₂ and/or H₂S), organic sulfur species (RSH, RSR, RSSR) and other impurities.
Streamline complex natural gas analysis for transport and custody transfer
It is fascinating to watch pipeline traffic these days, as enormous amounts of natural gas from a wide variety of fields routinely move across the gas supply chain.
Smart LNG operations with a digitally integrated and enabled supply chain
LNG has become the fastest-growing global energy segment with massive investment in the LNG supply chain, especially in liquefaction capacity.
Calculate LNG vaporization rate during cooling of container metal
Use of the same fluid for liquefaction startup and cooling of the metal vessel and interconnected piping that contain the cold LNG may cause the fluid temperature to increase up to the boiling point and then flash into the vapor phase.
Making low-emissions LNG a reality
Last year was a milestone year for LNG. In 2019, roughly 40 metric MMtpy of additional supply became available, and 71 metric MMtpy of new liquefaction capacity were announced—both record highs.
Regional Focus: The role of small-scale LNG in Russia’s energy agenda
A number of factors are challenging Russia’s position in the energy markets: the change in the global natural gas landscape, the abundance of gas, expanding LNG trade, and the increased interconnectivity among pipeline systems that makes possible reverse flows.
