China gives nod to $3.6-B project to turn coal into gas

(Reuters) China's top planning agency gave the greenlight to a $3.6-B pilot project to convert coal to natural gas (CTG) in the country's northwestern region of Xinjiang, according to an industry website on Wednesday.
The CTG plant designed to produce 4 Bcmy of synthetic gas, using local coal resource in Xinjiang. The project is estimated to create 1,700 jobs.
The lead investor in the project is Suxin Energy, a firm backed by Jiangsu provincial government specializing in coal-based clean energy development.
