Ukraine aims to triple biomethane output to 150 MMm3 in 2026
Ukraine, one of Europe's leading agricultural producers, plans to triple biomethane output to 150 MMm3 in 2026 and raise it further to 500 MMm3 by 2030, deputy Ukrainian economy minister Taras Vysotskiy said on Friday.
Prior to the war with Russia, Ukraine was nearly self-sufficient in natural gas, meeting almost all of its needs through domestic production.
Russian attacks on the energy sector have severely crippled output, forcing Kyiv to sharply ramp up imports.
In tandem with efforts to boost conventional gas extraction, Ukraine has accelerated its biofuels initiatives, launching the construction of several new biogas plants which utilize agricultural waste, livestock residue, straw, and sugar beet.
Biomethane production has risen to 108 MMm3 now from 50 MMm3 at the end of 2025 and was on track to reach 150 MMm3 by the end of the year, Vysotskiy told media.
The Ukrainian Bioenergy Association has said Ukraine currently operates six biomethane plants.
Ukrainian companies exported more than 11.2 MMm3 of biomethane to Europe for the first time in 2025.
