U.S. remains Spain's top gas source but Russian shipments increase
Liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States remained Spain's biggest gas source in March, though its share narrowed as Russian shipments rose sharply and total imports grew slightly year-on-year, data from grid operator Enagas showed on Friday.
In March, Spain imported 37,633 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of gas, up from 36,530 GWh a year earlier.
The U.S. accounted for 11,938 GWh, or 31.7% of the total, followed by Algeria with 10,262 GWh, or 30.2%. Russian imports surged to 9,807 GWh, representing 26.1% of the total, more than double the 4,393 gigawatt-hours imported a year earlier.
The U.S. has become Europe's main LNG supplier as the region has tried to phase out Russian energy since Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.
However, March data revealed the challenge of cutting that dependence, with Russian gas shipments to Spain rising sharply to account for over a quarter of total imports, while Spain's reliance on U.S. LNG eased, dropping from 44.4% in January to 33.8% in February and 31.7% in March.
Liquefied natural gas accounted for 72.0% of supply, up from 69.6% in March 2025.
