QazaqGaz, Qatar's UCC finish pre-FEED for second gas processing plant at Kashagan
QazaqGaz and Qatar's UCC Holding have completed the pre-FEED (front-end engineering design) stage of a project to build a second gas processing plant (GPP) at the Kashagan field with annual capacity of 2.5 billion cubic meters.
"QazaqGaz is working with Qatari company UCC Holding on the construction of a GPP at the Kashagan field with capacity of 2.5 bcm per year under an intergovernmental agreement. The pre-FEED stage has now been completed and we plan to move to the FEED stage," the company said in response to questions from the agency.
"Approaches to the project's contract strategy are now being worked out with UCC Holding," QazaqGaz added.
The cost of the project has been determined, the company said, without disclosing the amount. "The amount is subject to clarification in the course of further development of the design documentation at the next stages," the company said.
QazaqGaz also recalled that the construction of the first GPP at Kashagan, with capacity to process 1 bcm of gas per year, is scheduled for completion by the end of 2026. "All of the main process equipment is at the construction site. Additional equipment will be delivered and installed at the site by the end of this year," the company said.
The first plant at the field was initially scheduled for completion in 2025, but the timeframe was later pushed back to the middle of 2026.
Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said in January 2025 that work on the gas processing plants at the Kashagan and Zhanaozen fields was going "unsatisfactorily" and ordered that the projects be completed on schedule.
This project will, among other things, provide natural gas to Kazakhstan's regions.
Kashagan is an offshore oil and gas field in Kazakhstan's sector of the Caspian Sea and the largest international investment project in the country. The field has recoverable reserves of 9 billion-13 billion barrels of oil. Commercial production began on November 1, 2016.
The shareholders of project operator NCOC are KMG Kashagan B.V. with 16.877%, Shell (SPB: RDS.A) Kazakhstan Development B.V. with 16.807%, Total EP Kazakhstan with 16.807%, Eni subsidiary AgipCaspian Sea B.V. with 16.807%, ExxonMobil Kazakhstan Inc. with 16.807%, CNPC Kazakhstan B.V. with 8.333%, and Inpex NorthCaspian Sea Ltd. with 7.563%.
